Data created by applications, i.e. Microsoft Word or Excel, Payroll and Accounting packages, databases, etc. can be considered as Company data.

The Installation and configuration of system(s) is also a form of data. This data includes Operating System files and settings, configuration of applications that are used to manipulate Company data, and much more. This data can be considered as System data.

System and Company data need to be protected against failure. The failure can come from a wide variety of circumstances, including hardware failure (hard disks, motherboard, etc), corruption caused by malfunctioning applications, or even a virus attack.
