UPS

Loss of electrical power to a business critical computer can have disastrous results, including data loss and system corruption, as the machine and its programs has not been shutdown in an orderly fashion.

An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) device is an external unit that protects against loss of electrical power. An UPS device is connected to the regular electrical power supply, and computer equipment is then connected to the UPS device. The UPS device has a battery that can provide seamless standby power for a given period in the event of power loss.

With management software, administration can provide safe system shutdown in the event of an emergency. Communication between the UPS device and the management software can determine any state, if the power supply is available, if unavailable power has resumed normal service, or if the standby battery supply from the UPS has drained below a set threshold, and the computer should be shutdown safely.

The UPS device also provides the ability to filter the electrical power supply to ensure a smooth supply.
